The Story of the Renault Card Key

The origins of the card

A crucial part of the daily lives of car owners, Renault's hands-free card has become a global phenomenon. It was first developed twenty years ago and is now one of the most innovative innovations within the company. Pascaline who is the Head of Cross-Cutting Products at the Products division is taking us on journey to learn the story behind this helpful accessory.

In 2001, the Laguna II, a saloon that aimed at capturing the essence of 'lifestyle' driving, was introduced into production. It was a time that saw great innovation, including numerous new equipment features that helped customers enjoy the full benefits of their car.

However, the people who occupied the cars had to make use of keys to open and close their doors. Renault engineers determined that this was a significant problem for many.

They decided to put an electronic contactless card into their vehicles, and develop an application that would allow motorists to unlock and start their cars simply by shaking their hands. The card's key is found in two of three Renault vehicles. The car will open automatically when the card is placed near the ignition barrel, or on the centre console. This is a genuine Renault remote control keycard (without blade). It comes in a clam-packed box and is ready to be programmed using Abrites Diagnostics for Renault/ Dacia Software with the ProTAG Programmer.

The design

A Renault key card, or even remote car keys, is a wonderful convenience to have in our everyday lives. The technology

Luckily, the product lead on Laguna II, Bernard Dumondel was staying in a hotel at the time, and used his room key to unlock his car. He was of the opinion that keys for cars could be made with the same magnetic strip that was used to make the key.

In the following years the card was seen as an innovation that was revolutionary and is now present on two of three Renault vehicles. Renault has chosen to use the new features of smartphones to improve the hands-free cards, even the fact that it appears they are about to replace it.

The keyless entry system

The hands free card of Renault was a revolutionary piece of technology when it was launched 20 years ago. The exterior of the card is identical however the technology has been improved to make it more user-friendly and more secure to hack.

It's not able to be used from outside to open doors or start the car until the driver is able to activate it. This is because radio antennae "around the car" are configured to detect whether the key is inside or outside. The key can still turn on the ignition from a distance, but it will not open the doors. This is for your safety.

The second is that the wireless remote control transmissions of the system employ a rolling-code. This decreases the chance of someone intercepting the control message and then transmitting it to gain access, but doesn't completely eliminate it. [1]
