The Story of the Renault Card Key

The hands-free card is one of the most important inventions that have ever changed the way that people use cars. Pascaline, the Head of Cross-Cutting Products at Renault Group Products walks us through the history of this tiny device.

The origins of the card

Hands free cards from Renault are a global success. It's become an integral part of the daily life of car owners. It was first designed 20 years ago and is now among the most innovative innovations within the company. Pascaline who is the Head of Cross-Cutting Products at the Products division takes us on a a journey to discover the history behind this handy accessory.

In 2001 the Laguna II, an executive saloon that was designed to be a 'lifestyle vehicle", went into production. It was a time of tremendous innovation and an array of new features features which helped customers take advantage of their vehicle to the fullest.

The occupants still had to use keys to open and shut their doors. Renault engineers were determined that this was a huge problem for many people.

The result was that they decided to put a contactless keycard in their vehicles. They also developed the system that would allow users to unlock and start their cars by simply waving hands. The card's key is found in two out of three Renault vehicles. The car will be unlocked automatically when the card is close to the ignition barrel, or on the centre console. This is a genuine Renault remote control keycard (without the blade). It comes individually clam-packed and is ready to be programmed using Abrites Diagnostics for Renault/ Dacia Software with the ProTAG Programmer.

The hands-free cards were first introduced in 2001 on the Laguna II saloon, which was designed to be a "lifestyle" car of 21st century. But, despite a thorough design brief based on over thousands of customer interviews, which examined their lifestyles, habits, and expectations, Renault ran out of time to design prototypes and test all possible uses.

Bernard Dumondel was the product leader of Laguna II at the time. He utilized his hotel room key to unlock his car. He thought that the car key could be created with the same magnetic strip as the key.

In the years to come the card was hailed as a revolutionary invention and is now found on two out of three Renault vehicles. Although renault master key programming appear to be nearing the point of replacing it, Renault has chosen to utilize these new technologies without having the hands-free card go off the radar.

The keyless entry system

The hands-free cards of Renault were an innovation in technology at its launch 20 years ago. The exterior is identical, but the technology has been upgraded to make it more user-friendly and more difficult to hack.

It can't be used from outside to unlock doors or start the car until the driver has activated it. The reason for this is that radio signal antennae "around" the car are configured to detect the presence of the key outside or inside it. The key can still function at a distance to begin the ignition of the car, but not to unlock the doors, and that's for your safety.

The wireless remote control transmissions of the system utilize the rolling-code. This reduces the chance of security being compromised by someone intercepting and retransmitting the control message to gain access, but does not eliminate the risk altogether. [1]
